SUSPENDED YOGA

THE BENEFITS

STRENGTH

Build strength with progressive interesting, dynamic and fun movements using the Back Balance Suspended Yoga Rig and your body weight.

In very simple terms, applying stress (resistance) to your muscles causes them to adapt and become stronger. The stress applied causes microscopic tearing of the muscle fibres.  The fibres heal and grow stronger with the help of testosterone, growth hormone and nutrients.  This takes time and is why it is important to rest these muscles to allow for recovery.

BALANCE

Improve balance and body awareness:

The unstable nature of suspended yoga requires focus and concentration, which can improve balance and proprioception (awareness of body position in space). This heightened body awareness can have positive effects on posture and coordination.

BACK BEND

Back bending regularly can improve spinal flexibility, posture, core strength, breathing capacity, mood, and overall vitality.  It counters to constant leaning forward of the body in daily activities e.g. driving, using devices, eating, sitting at desks etc., and opens up the anterior chain encouraging balance in our posture.

MOBILITY

Mobility or flexibility is not solely about stretching muscles but also about creating balance between opposing muscle groups. Suspended yoga often incorporates movements that engage both the flexors and extensors of a particular muscle group simultaneously. This balanced strengthening can help improve flexibility by preventing muscle imbalances and promoting optimal joint function.

INVERSION

When the body is positioned upside down, it can have both positive and potential considerations for spine health. A highly recommended exercise for most, especially to counter constant sitting e.g. dump truck operators, offices workers and constant standing and/or lifting weight.  Here are some effects to consider:

  • Spinal Decompression:

Inversions in suspended yoga, such as hanging upside down or performing movements with the support of a BBSY Rig, can create traction and decompression in the spine. This can help relieve pressure on the intervertebral discs, potentially reducing compression and promoting spinal health.

  • Improve Blood Flow and Circulation:

Inversions can facilitate improved blood flow and circulation to the spinal discs and surrounding structures. This increased blood supply can help nourish and hydrate the spinal tissues, including the discs, and support their health.

  • Core and Back Strength:

Inversions engage the core muscles, including the deep stabilising muscles of the back, which are important for maintaining spinal stability and proper alignment. Strengthening these muscles can provide better support for the spine and help prevent or manage back pain.

Percentage Body Weigh Lower Back
  • Sitting and standing for long periods throughout the day leads to lower back stiffness and body de-conditioning.

  • Sitting adds about 40% more force into the lower back than standing.

  • Inversion removes 100% of gravitational force from the back and allows muscles to relax, and spinal discs to rehydrate.

BALANCED BREATHING
FOCUS ON
balanced breathing

The exchange of O2 and CO2 is essential for health.  Balanced Breathing is mostly about manipulating CO2 levels in the lungs and blood and managing the nervous system.  It is an ancient practice informed by modern science to provide safe, practical exercises that deliver immediate results.

To enhance our Suspended Yoga practice, we incorporate Balanced Breathing techniques.
